Africa

Overview

Usually, the number one reason for travellers to visit Africa is to embark on a safari or to climb Kilimanjaro, and while Africa certainly does have some of the most prolific wildlife viewing opportunities and one of the seven summits, there are so many more reasons to visit Africa. The continent teems with unique landscapes, ancient history, geographical wonders and active adventures to boot.

South Africa

With stunning natural landscapes, vibrant cities and exotic wildlife, South Africa is the perfect place for an adventure.

Wildlife is central to any holiday in South Africa. Visitors flock to go on Safari in search of the legendary ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo.

The waters surrounding South Africa are a hit with marine life enthusiasts too, with vividly coloured fish, whales, dolphins and diminutive African penguins. For those brave enough, you can get daringly close to the voracious and predatory great white shark on a cage diving experience.

Away from the wildlife, visitors can discover Cape Town and take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain, hike to the peak of Lion’s Head or visit Robben Island and see the prison where Nelson Mandela was held, or visit the museum dedicated to his life.

Perhaps you’d prefer the bustling metropolis of Johannesburg with its trendy bars and restaurants, stylish shopping malls, and contemporary African art galleries.

Why not explore the pin-striped vineyards in the Cape Winelands where you can sip Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and the exclusive South African Pinotage.

You could drive the famous Garden Route in your own 4×4. With 200 miles of stunning scenery including lagoons, forests, lakes, beautiful beaches and peppered with colourful African towns and villages, this is one of the most photogenic road trips in the world.

South Africa offers luxury five-star hotels, elegant game lodges and stylish tented safari camps. There are also plenty of inns and self catering accommodation for the more budget conscious traveller.

Marrakech

Marrakech is an intoxicating city known for its souks, spices, snake charmers and hidden palaces, though these days it’s prized as much for it’s trendy art galleries, hip hotels and elegant hammams. Offering a tantalising taste of Africa within easy reach of Europe, it certainly lives up to the hype, and not only thanks to its fabled ancient medina.

Cape Verde

Jutting up from the Atlantic, some 500km west of Senegal, this stunning island chain has a captivating blend of mountains, beaches and peaceful seaside villages. On Santo Antão, craggy peaks hide piercing green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, ideal for epic hikes.

Egypt

With thousands of years of history, incredible beaches and pristine coral reefs, Egypt has something for everyone.

If ancient cultures and archaeological sites are your thing, then the sun-drenched ‘Land of the Pharaohs’ is the perfect destination for you.

Gaze upon the Great Pyramids of Giza; marvel at the Great Sphinx; walk like an Egyptian through the Valley of the Kings; or explore the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, which holds an astonishing collection of ancient artefacts.

Beyond its ancient landmarks, Egypt offers breathtaking beaches stretching across both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. With gleaming white sands and warm turquoise waters, these beaches are the perfect place to soak up the Egyptian sun.

Egypt is also a paradise for divers and marine life enthusiasts. Its reefs are a kaleidoscope of colour, teeming with bright corals, exotic fish, sharks, as well as playful dolphins.

The country is also famous for its resort towns such as Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh, offering ultra-luxurious hotels and upmarket restaurants as well as boutiques and big bazaars. In the evenings you can expect to find everything from foam parties to live music concerts.

Perhaps you would prefer to explore Egypt on a luxurious Nile river cruise from Luxor to Aswan, where you will experience traditional Egyptian cuisine, be entertained by belly dancers, and enjoy theme nights where you can dress in traditional Egyptian-styled costumes.
